TUESDAY 21ST MARCH 2006

After a superb first day I was clearly going to return for some more SWT action! The day started with a bit of a wait - a two and three quarter hour wait! This was due to our first train being the 11:54 off Basingstoke and our start time being 09:00. We were allowed to do whatever we wanted so I went off with Matthew (my fellow 'student') to the town centre to have a look around. We arrived back and met up with the same guard who looked after us the previous day, Anthony Cutler. He got his stuff together and we left the driver/guard's mess room and boarded the train, however a trainee guard and a guard inspector took the train to London which meant we only had to check the tickets for him, rather than operating the doors and PA system. We also spent a bit of time in the rear cab where we had a bit of a race with the first (and at the time 'the only') refreshed Class 442, number 2401. An image of this can be found in the photograph gallery.

The trip to London went as it should do, although two people came to our attention. The first was a lad who didn't have a valid ticket, although he was then charged for a valid ticket. The other chap didn't present a ticket and was therefore ordered to leave the train at Surbiton, where the station staff were made aware of this.

We then left the four car Class 450 at London Waterloo and boarded the 13:39 to Southampton Central which was formed of two Class 444 five car units, therefore forming us a ten car train. At Clapham Junction only the first five coaches can allow passengers on/off which involves walking to the join between the two units and isolating the rear unit through the SDO (Selective Door Opening) controls. We were on time at each station and despite being held outside Basingstoke, we only required 45 seconds out of the 4 minute slack time. The driver phoned us to say that he believed some of the toilets not to be working. We went through the train and concluded that only 3 of the 8 toilets were working, meaning 5 toilets were not operational! The next hour or so was pretty much uneventful down to Southampton where Matthew and myself parted company with Anthony after he showed us 'Overline House' where we were to sit in on a guard's meeting the following day.

Myself and Matthew boarded the 15:30 off Southampton Central and changed at Winchester from where I travelled back to Farnborough on the train, with Matthew alighting at Basingstoke.

Here is the relevant part of the schedule card that we accompanied Anthony on:
