TRAIN RE-SKINNING TUTORIAL

You require the following tools to re-skin a train:

Tool's Name Tool's Homepage
TGA Tool http://www.mnwright.btinternet.co.uk/index.htm
Shape Viewer http://www.railpage.org.au/steam4me/trainsim/sviewr.html
Any Image Editor I recommend using Paint Shop Pro or Adobe Photoshop.

WHAT TO DO

  • Open your main MSTS folder and then locate and open 'TRAINS', then 'TRAINSET' and finally the name of your desired train. For this example, I will use 'CoxDemotrain'.

  • To make your repaint a separate train that you can select from within MSTS, you will have to rename this folder. I will rename the example train, 'CoxDemo'.

  • You must then rename the '.ENG', the '.WAG' and the two '.sd' files to match. In this case it would be 'CoxDemo.wag' etcetera.

  • We must then locate the '.ENG' file(s) of your chosen train and open it/them in Windows' Wordpad/Notepad.

  • In the '.ENG', there are about 5 references to files in your train. For example, replace the 'CoxDemotrain' references with 'CoxDemo'.

  • You must then locate the '.WAG' file(s) of your chosen train and open them in Windows' Wordpad/Notepad.

  • In the '.WAG', there are a few references to files in your train. For example, replace the 'CoxDemotrain' references with 'CoxDemo'.

  • You must then locate the '.SD' file(s) of your chosen train and open them in Windows' Wordpad/Notepad.

  • In the '.SD', there is one reference to a '.S' file in your train. For example, replace the 'Shape ( CoxDemotrain_car.s' references with 'Shape ( CoxDemo_car.s'.

  • You then open your 'Shape Viewer' program and make sure your modified train looks okay.

  • You must now make a back-up of this file, so if something goes wrong, you won't have to redo all of the above steps.

  • You now open TGATool and load each of the '.ACE' files. There will be several in your train but I will only give the procedure on how to modify one as the procedure is exactly the same for each '.ACE' file.

  • When the image is in the preview box, go into the 'Image' menu and click 'Send Main Image To Editor'.

  • When the image has loaded into your image editor, it will have a name consisting of letters and numbers.

  • When you have modified it, you must save it to the default location (which can be set in TGATool).

  • You must have TGATool still open, or the windows will not have any alphas! You go into the 'Image' menu and click 'Reload Data'. The changes should now appear in the preview box in TGATool.

  • You now go into the 'Export' menu and click 'Ace (Alpha) - not DXT'. It may be different for some trains but I think this is the right export method for most. (Please see the model author for more details).

  • In the 'Export as ACE Texture' box which now pops up, give it the same name as the original in the folder that you are working in and click 'Save'. If you get a message asking if you want to overwrite, click 'Yes'.

  • You now complete the process from opening each '.ACE' file to here with each of your '.ACE' files.
