CONSIST CREATION TUTORIAL

When you download and install an MSTS train, it may not be seen in the list of selectable trains or you may want to add your own choice of other stock to it. This tutorial tells you how to create 'Consists'. 'Consists' are the files that let you drive your stock in various formations. Remember - you can only drive electric trains on routes that are electrified.

  • Load the 'Editors and Tools' utility and click on 'Activity Editor'.
  • In the top left, click 'File' and then 'New' and select any route from the menu that pops-up. Same goes for the 'Activity Name' pop-up. Neither of these play any part in creating consists.
  • In the right column click the 'New' button that is under the heading 'Player'. In the window that pops-up, click the 'New' button under the heading 'Consist'.
  • Type something in the 'Name' and 'Display Name' fields that will make you remember what is in the consist. I usually use the same name for each field e.g. '2SWTClass458s' shows it is two Class 458s in South West Trains livery joined together.
  • Double click on the stock you want in the consist. You must only choose ones with the small symbol on the left of the name for the driving vehicle as it denotes they have a cabview. Ensure the stock you are using has the same brake type, denoted by the colour of the line that appears under each piece of rolling stock (in the preview pane). You must also ensure that all rolling stock has the same coupling system. If this is not the case then Train Simulator will not allow you to use the locomotive and rolling stock together in the consist. If you wish to remove an item from your consist, drag it from the preview pane to the small square icon on the left, just above the preview pane.
  • When done click 'Save and Exit' and then close all of the other windows down.
  • Your chosen consist will now be available to use the next time you load Microsoft Train Simulator.
