ACTIVITY UNPACKING TUTORIAL

When you download an MSTS activity, you will notice that it is a '.apk' file and your computer will be unable to install it by default. This tutorial explains the steps required to successfully install and MSTS activity.

Using Windows 98 | Using Windows ME | Using Windows XP

USING WINDOWS 98

  • Double click your activity.
  • Select View & then Folder Options & finally File Types.
  • Go down the Registered File Types to Packaged Activity.
  • Select the Packaged Activity, click Remove and ignore the warning.
  • Select the View tab and make sure under Advanced Settings, the checkbox labelled Hide File Extensions For Known File Types is unticked.
  • Click OK & look in the folder for a file with a .apk extension, Right Click and click on Open With.
  • When the dialog box opens, select the Other button.
  • Make your way to C:/Program Files/Microsoft Games/Train Simulator/Utils/tsunpack.exe & click OK.
  • After returning to the dialog box, click OK & with the new error message, click OK & you will return to the folder.
  • Select View & then Folder Options & then the File Types tab.
  • Highlight the .APK list and click the Edit button.
  • In the Actions box, highlight Open and press Edit. In the actions box, you should see your MSTS location with \UTILS\tsunpack.exe on the end, in the Application Used To Perform box.
  • In the Application Used box, add "%1" to the end so you get: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator\UTILS\tsunpack.exe" "%1" & then click OK.
  • On the File Types box, click Close and the same with Folder Options.
  • Now Double Click your desired .APK file and you should get notified that it has been Unpackaged successfully.

USING WINDOWS ME

  • Open your desired activity.
  • Select Tools & then Folder Options & finally File Types.
  • Go down the Registered File Types to Packaged Activity.
  • Select the Packaged Activity, click Delete & ignore the warning.
  • Select the View tab and make sure under Advanced Settings, the checkbox labelled Hide File Extensions For Known File Types is unticked.
  • Click Apply & then OK & look in the folder for a file with a .apk extension, Right Click and click on Open With.
  • When the dialog box opens, select the Other button.
  • Make your way to C:/Program Files/Microsoft Games/Train Simulator/Utils/tsunpack.exe & click Open.
  • After returning to the dialog box, click OK & with the new error message, click OK & you will return to the folder.
  • Select Tools & then Folder Options & the File Types tab.
  • Highlight the .APK list and click the Advanced button.
  • In the Actions box, highlight Open and press Edit. In the actions box, you should see your MSTS location with \UTILS\tsunpack.exe on the end, in the Application Used To Perform box.
  • In the Application Used box, add "%1" to the end so you get: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator\UTILS\tsunpack.exe" "%1" & then click OK.
  • On the Edit File Type box, click OK and with Folder Options, click Apply then Close.
  • Now Double Click your desired .APK file and you should get notified that it has been Unpackaged successfully.

USING WINDOWS XP

  • Go to Start, then Control Panel. In Category View pick Appearance and Themes then Folder Options. In Classic View simply select Folder Options.
  • Choose the File Types tab. Scroll down to APK Packaged Activity & select it & then click the Advanced button.
  • From the Edit File Type window that pops up, select Open and click the Edit button.
  • In the box, Application Used To Perform Action, go right and replace the area in quotes with "%1" and click OK.
